Identity Essentials

Cultural Histories

All of my pictures are in gray scale because I felt like it simplified the images a bit to really zoom in on what aspect I wanted the viewer to identify with.

The texture and thinkness of my hair.
African American hair is usually thicker and coarser than any other race. It's one of the characteristics that identifies my ethnicity. Also the way I style it in a curly afro is apart of my culture.
My features are apart of identifying my race, culture, family line.

I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character
-Martin Luther King Jr.

My skin is plagued by a common skin disease, Eczema.
I was told when I walk into a room my face isn't seen my biggest attributes are the first thing that's noticed. Is my hair out the ordinary or is my complexion different. Why doesn't my face matter? Black in America.

March 5th Lecture Homework "The Art of Picture Taking"

Picture I've taken myself that includes someone I know

Picture that has been taken of me by someone else

Pictures that were taken by someone I don't know, of someone I don't know.

A. what is the purpose of this photo; why was it taken? why do you keep it? why did you choose it for this assignment? What is its significance to you?

-The purpose of these photos were just capturing moments of everyday life that I experience from my eyes, my friend's eyes and a strangers. I kept and chose the photos, because they were quite original. They weren't these everyday photos that most friends half with arms wrapped around each other smiling and posed for the camera; we just snapped pictures of unposed and unplanned moments. The significance of the photos are experiencing life through another person's eyes and outlook.

B. What is the emotional relationship between the photographer and the subject? how does that influence the way the picture was taken? How does it affect the way you look at the photo? What is the photographer' atttude toward the subject? What is the subject's attitude towards the photographer?

-I feel the emotional relationship between the photographer and the subject is the impact they receive from peering into that small whole in the camera and seeing a whole other world or a unique angle that they didn't see before. It influences the way the picture was taken by giving the viewer a piece of them of what they saw and what they felt at that very moment before the picture was snapped. I think the photographer's attitude towards any picture would be just trying to get their point across and their ideas and purpose to be said without words. The subject's attitude toward the photographer should always agree with the photographer's purpose either it be stationed or in motion.

C. In what context is this photo intended to be viewed?, by who, for how long? Do you think you will still remember this photo in ten years?

-I think all the photos were intended to be viewed in a light "let's take a walk in the parka and see what happens" kind of tone. I think the viewers are aimed at people my age who have experienced the going ons in the images and can sit for a moment rethink about the last time they've had a moment such as this and really get a feel for the photo. I think I will definitely remember the photo my friend took of me, because I think it's really extraordinary and different; especially because it's not a picture of my face, but it is a picture of me.

BEWARE! I May Take A Bite Out Of You!

The Agenda was to make a video that is 60 seconds or less and makes people uncomfortable watching it. Cannibalism is what I chose to present to my viewers. Hope it makes them squirm.
